OTTAWA POP EXPO RAISES OVER $10,000 IN TOYS FOR CHEO AND A FIRST GUEST IS ANNOUNCED FOR OTTAWA COMICCON

November 24, 2014

For immediate release.

Ottawa (Ontario), November 24, 2014 – Ottawa Pop Expo’s second edition was another success, with over 7,500 fans attending over two days. The annual fan convention showcased multiple genres in pop culture, including science-fiction, fantasy, horror, video games, animation, toys and comic books. Over two splendid days, fans in an out of costume beamed and smiled as they posed for pictures, attended celebrity Q&A’s, or hunted down that elusive collectible.

Fans had the chance to meet some of their favorite celebs, shop for the holidays, play board games and take pictures with costumed fans. On hand were guests from movies and TV series, including Brandon Routh (Arrow), best known as Clark Kent/Superman in director Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns (2006), Emily Kinney from AMC’s The Walking Dead and James Marsters (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), who charmed everyone they met. However, the highlight of the guest encounters, unanimously agreed to by fans, was the incomparable John Barrowman (Doctor Who/Torchwood, Arrow). Barrowman posed for some of the most humorous (that will surely make the rounds on the Internet), had some unforgettable encounters with fans during his autograph sessions, and had one of the most entertaining Q&A sessions with close to one thousand in attendance. Fans were also treated to several screenings, workshops, panels, as well as the Masquerade, with a contestant dressed as Dragonborn from the videogame Skyrim walking away with Best in Show.

The Ottawa Pop Expo organizers were able to raise $10,000 to purchase toys, games, comics and geeky apparel for kids at Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO), just in time for the Holidays. Famous cosplayer Yaya Han and several vendors also donated additional merchandise for CHEO. In addition, Pop Expo donated $2,500 to the Capital City Garrison to give to Toy Mountain. The Capital City Garrison, part of the 501st Legion, was also able to raise over $1,250 for Make-A-Wish Canada and The Doctor Who Society of Canada managed to raise $2,250 for CHEO’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

With Ottawa Pop Expo wrapped, the organizers will now be getting the ball rolling for the fourth edition of Ottawa Comiccon, taking place on May 8 to 10, 2015 at the EY Centre. The yearly comic and pop culture event will have special block of tickets for sale in mid-December. The first guest announcement for Comiccon is none other than geek icon, actor, author, blogger and social media force, Wil Wheaton.  Wheaton currently has a recurring role on The Big Bang Theory, has also appeared in Felicia Day's web series The Guild, hosts the board gaming web series Tabletop for Geek & Sundry, and used to solve problems with pluck and naiveté on Star Trek: The Next Generation, as Wesley Crusher. More guests will be announced in the months leading up to Ottawa Comiccon.
