Ottawa Pop Expo is set to return for its third edition on November 21-22, 2015 at the EY Centre. Presented by its sister show, Ottawa Comiccon, this annual fan convention showcases multiple genres in pop culture, including science-fiction, fantasy, horror, video games, animation, toys and comic books, with a stronger accent on film and television. Over two splendid days, fans in an out of costume will surely beam and smile as they pose for pictures, attend celebrity Q&A’s, or hunt for elusive collectibles and holiday presents.
Star Wars is one of the most beloved science fiction franchises, the epic space opera centered on a film series created by George Lucas, that depicts a galaxy described as "far, far away", and portrays adventures and battles between good and evil. One of the most memorable characters from Star Wars is Darth Maul, which Lucas described "a figure from your worst nightmare". Ottawa Pop Expo is proud to welcome, not one, but two actors that personified the Sith Lord, Ray Park and Sam Witwer. Maul is the primary antagonist of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (portrayed by Park) and a central villain for the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars (voiced by Witwer).
Besides being well remembered for the iconic villain, Ray Park portrayed the evil mutant Toad on Bryan Singer’s X-Men (2000), a film that paved the road for the super-hero film renaissance. In 2009, he played Edgar on the TV series Heroes, who could potentially make a return on the revival Heroes Reborn. More recently, Park has taken on the role of the silent ninja, Snake Eyes, in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (2009), and its sequel G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013).
A favorite in the science-fiction world, Sam Witwer began his career in the memorable role of Lt. Crashdown in Battlestar Galactica, before landing the role of Davis Bloom/ Doomsday, the man fated to kill Superman, on CW’s Smallville. From 2011 to 2014, he was the lead in the supernatural drama Being Human, an adaptation of the popular British television series, which he played the heroic Aidan, a sensual and brooding vampire. His participation in the Star Wars franchise is extensive, having portrayed Darth Vader’s vengeful apprentice, StarKiller in the LucasArts’ video game sensations Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, Emperor Palpatine in Star Wars: Rebels, and the aforementioned Darth Maul in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and the new Disney Infinity 3.0 video game.
Also on the guest list, is Brett Dalton, who stars as Agent Grant Ward on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The series was co-created for ABC by Joss Whedon, based on the Marvel Comics organization S.H.I.E.L.D., a fictional peacekeeping and spy agency in a world populated with superheroes and numerous supernatural phenomena. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is set to return for its third season on CTV on September 29. Dalton recently ventured into another fantasy world, with the terrifying new video game Until Dawn, a recently released PS4-exclusive, that received wide critical acclaim. The game, which stars Hayden Panettiere (Heroes) and Rami Malek (Mr. Robot), revolves around eight teens staying the night at a log cabin on the anniversary of their friend's death, and like in any good horror story, things take a turn for the worst.
